These large beautiful birds are soaring through the forest of eastern Hokkaido, Japan.  They are enchanting birds, also called the Red-Capped Crain.  They are also the National Bird of The Peoples Republic of China.

In the Japanese native religion of Shinto, the Japanese Crain is a sacred animal representing longevity, as they mate for life.

In Japanese Buddhism, the Crains carry an auspicious meaning, long life and happiness and frequently appear in temple art and in Zen

paintings.

Common and also seen in Heian and Kamakura scolls, screens, and kimono designs, along with Edo Period master painters and artists.
